How to break the glass ceiling for the Millenium Girl*

by Madeleine Champagne

* Millenium girl : name used by the American press to describe the woman who began working in the year 2000 or so.

Recent studies show that the glass ceiling still exists in 2012. In Montreal, according to a recent study on the participation of female municipal executives the quantitative results show that all participants appear very favourable to women in management in general, however it also brings to light two dominant dynamic hampering their progression...

First, the joint responsibility of managing their family and working activity and secondly, as perceived by 64 % of the participants, the fact that stereotypical beliefs against female managers, especially those related their management skills, affect greatly their upward mobility.

A recent study of Catalys also notes that self-promotion, yet acceptable behaviour for men, is unattractive in women.  Also too often, sponsorship remains exclusive to men.

In Canada as a whole, the growing presence of women in academic curricula is not enough, to let them evolve to higher grounds. If they have won 60% of all university degrees in 2010, women hold 40% of management positions, and comprise only 14% of professional boards.

Finally they occupy a meagre 17.7% of senior management positions, according to the same study by Catalyst.
